Summary | Planned retreat forms an essential component of minimizing the adverse consequences of climate change and its impacts. However, relatively little is known about how this can be done to best protect, preserve and promote individual and community well-being. To advance knowledge in this area, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), in collaboration with Gevity Consulting Inc. and a broad team of planned retreat practitioners and subject matter experts from academia, government and industry, produced this report. The aim of this report is not to arrive at a concrete set of best practices, as this space is still rapidly evolving and very context dependent. Rather, the report seeks to identify success factors and common pitfalls that are likely to extend more broadly across planned retreat efforts. |
Local Relevance | This report identifies success factors and common pitfalls when conducting a planned retreat from climate change impacts in Canada, including the NWT. It includes a case study of Tuktoyaktuk. |
