Summary The Arctic Report Card (hereafter ‘ARC’) has been issued annually since 2006. It is a timely and peer-reviewed source for clear, reliable, and concise environmental information on the current state of different components of the Arctic system relative to historical records. In this issue, the Arctic continues to warm at a faster rate than global average. The 2024 Arctic report card highlights record breaking and near record breaking observations that demonstrate dramatic change, including Arctic tundra transformations from carbon sink to carbon source, declines in previously large inland caribou herd, and increasing winter precipitation. Observations also reveal regional differences that make local and regional experiences of environmental change highly variable for people, plants, and animals. Adaptation is increasingly necessary and Indigenous knowledge and community-lead research are essential to understand and response to rapid Arctic changes.
Local Relevance This report card assesses the current state of the Arctic environment considering climate change, including the NWT.
