Summary | Changes in Arctic systems have increased the vulnerability of permafrost coastal regions to rapid environmental changes. These changes are impacting coastal morphologies, terrestrial and offshore processes and ecosystems, biogeochemical cycling, infrastructure, cultural heritage sites, community well-being, and human subsistence lifestyles. This Rapid Response Assessment (RRA) aims to raise awareness about the importance of coastal and offshore permafrost by reviewing the state of knowledge about this environment, assessing the challenges faced by Arctic peoples living on the coast and providing recommendations on future research priorities. Two main story maps summarize the science, issues of concern identified by Arctic peoples, and policy considerations. We have also created a community space as a crowdsource storymap where people can share their observations and experiences about coastal permafrost issues. The assessment is structured as follows: -What is coastal and offshore permafrost? -Maps depicting permafrost conditions and changing Arctic coastal environments. |
Local Relevance | This Rapid Response Assessment aims to raise awareness about the importance of coastal and offshore permafrost by reviewing the state of knowledge about this environment, assessing the challenges faced by Arctic peoples living on the coast and providing recommendations on future research priorities. As such, this resource is relevant for coastal and offshore areas of the NWT. |
